Ficus natalensis, also known as the natal fig, is a tree in the Moraceae family. It is found in South Africa, Uganda, and Kenya, where it holds cultural significance to various indigenous communities. In Uganda, it is known as omutuba or omutoma, and in English, it is sometimes referred to as the barkcloth fig. This tree is often mistaken for its cousin, Ficus thonningii, also known as mugumo. Ficus natalensis is a popular species for bonsai cultivation due to its fast growth and resilience. Its bark is sustainably harvested to make barkcloth, a unique and environmentally-friendly fabric. This material is used in various modern applications, such as fashion, accessories, and interior design. The goal is to create sustainable job opportunities in East Africa by creating a global demand for barkcloth. These trees can be harvested annually for up to 40 years, producing up to 200 m2 of cloth each.
