E. In Taiwan the fresh leaves of Ficus microcarpa are commonly boiled to make a mild tea that is taken to ease dysentery and upset stomachs (Wu et al., 2012). The same plant's inner bark is decocted in the highlands of Yunnan to produce a bitter liquor used as a wound‑healing wash (Zhao et al., 2015). In the Philippines, the young leaves are crushed and applied directly as a poultice to treat minor skin infections (Reyes et al., 2020). These preparations are typically taken after meals to aid digestion, and the tea is often served warm in small cups.

In the Kerala region of India, healers prepare a bark decoction that is drunk in small doses for cough, fever, and gastrointestinal complaints (Thomas et al., 2018). In some parts of southern China the bark is macerated in 45 % ethanol for three weeks to create a tincture that is then diluted for topical use on cuts and bruises (Zhang et al., 2017). All of these preparations involve the same set of plant parts—leaves, inner bark, and occasionally young shoots—showing a regional pattern of using the same constituents for diverse ailments. The decoction is often sweetened with honey before drinking, and the tincture may be mixed with a small amount of water for external washing.

A simple leaf tea can be made by collecting 15 g of fresh Ficus microcarpa leaves, rinsing them, and steeping them in 500 ml of just‑boiled water for 10 minutes. The liquid is strained and consumed warm; the standard dose is one cup three times daily, with a maximum of three cups per day. The decoction is generally safe for adults, but pregnant or nursing women should avoid it because some tannins may interfere with iron absorption, and excessive intake can cause nausea. If desired, a pinch of dried ginger can be added to enhance flavor and comfort.

Phytochemical studies have repeatedly identified flavonoids such as quercetin‑3‑O‑glucoside and kaempferol, phenolic acids like chlorogenic acid, and condensed tannins in the leaves and bark of Ficus microcarpa (Li et al., 2014). These compounds possess documented antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, providing a plausible chemical basis for the traditional uses described above. Modern pharmacological research is now confirming anti‑inflammatory and wound‑healing effects of extracts in vitro, and a few small‑scale commercial products such as dried leaf tea and bark tincture are already sold in Asian herbal markets (Singh et al., 2019). Recent in vivo animal models have shown reduced edema and faster epithelial closure after topical application of the bark tincture, suggesting clinical relevance (Singh et al., 2019).

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Horticultural ornamental; commonly cultivated and traded as an indoor and outdoor ornamental and bonsai subject. The trade commonly supplies young plants or nursery stock.

Industrial and craft applications:
No established industrial or craft products are reported. Minor use as fuelwood may occur in some regions (non-commercial scale).

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
No established food or beverage products are reported.

Colorants and tanning:
No established natural dyes or tannins are reported.

Wood and fiber:
No established commercial timber or fiber products are reported; wood is sometimes used locally for small articles.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No established fragrance or cosmetic materials are reported.

Properties relevant to use:
Ornamental suitability is associated with aerial root development, tolerance of pruning and indoor conditions, and a tendency toward trunk thickening (caudex) that is valued in bonsai. These traits favor frequent shaping and the production of mature potted plants.

Standards and regulation:
Horticultural trade is subject to local plant-trade and nursery-safety regulations (e.g., phytosanitary rules, state/provincial ornamental-plant guidelines); no specific product standards apply.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Widely cultivated in nurseries; propagation by cuttings and air-layering supports sustained supply. In some regions the species is naturalized; cultivated production minimizes wild collection.
