Antiaris (Lesch.) is a modest genus in the mulberry family Moraceae (APG IV, 2016) that contains roughly five to seven recognized species. The type species, Antiaris toxicaria, is distributed from tropical West Africa through Central Africa to Southeast Asia, often occupying low‑land rainforest and riverine forest. This broadly tropical distribution together with a relatively low species count makes Antiaris a distinctive, if small, element of the family.

Morphologically the genus is characterized by medium‑sized trees that exude a milky latex when cut. Leaves are alternate, entire, and stipules are caducous, leaving only a small scar. Inflorescences are unisexual: male flowers form dense, pendulous catkins, while female flowers are borne in compact heads that later develop into small drupes. The ovary is superior with axile placentation and each fruit contains a single seed. These features, especially the combination of latex‑filled twigs and the dual inflorescence architecture, readily separate Antiaris from most other Moraceae.

Diversity and range are centred in West and Central Africa, with a secondary centre of endemism on Madagascar (e.g., Antiaris humbertii). Species occur from sea level to elevations of about 1 500 m, favouring moist, well‑drained soils in primary and secondary forests. Several taxa show narrow distributions and are regarded as regional endemics, while A. toxicaria spans multiple biogeographic zones, illustrating a classic Afro‑Asian disjunction.

Intrinsic biology remains incompletely documented, but observations point to wind‑mediated pollination (a common strategy in Moraceae) and fruit dispersal by birds, which are attracted to the small, fleshy drupes. Chromosome counts are consistently 2n = 28, indicating a base number x = 14 (Nakasone, 1990). The latex contains cardiac glycosides, making the trees toxic to herbivores, but this chemistry has not been linked to human medicinal use.

Taxonomically the genus has been placed in the tribe Antiarieae and, in recent phylogenomic analyses, falls within the Artocarpoideae, sister to a clade that includes Artocarpus and Morus (Datwyler & Weiblen, 2004). Classical treatments (Berg, 1985) recognize the five‑to‑seven species concept, while some authors have treated A. toxicaria as the sole species (Miller & Balick, 2002). Modern checklists (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024) adopt the broader circumscription, but point out that further molecular work is needed to resolve species limits, especially for the African–Madagascar members.

Human relevance is non‑medicinal: the wood is used locally for light construction and furniture, though the persistent latex can be a processing nuisance. The glossy foliage and shade‑providing canopy have led to occasional planting in tropical ornamental gardens. No species are cultivated as food crops, and none have become significant weeds.

Conservation status varies: while A. toxicaria remains widespread, several narrow endemics, such as A. humbertii, are threatened by habitat loss and are listed as vulnerable or endangered in regional Red Lists. Continued deforestation in both mainland Africa and Madagascar poses the greatest risk. Improved population monitoring and habitat protection are essential to safeguard the remaining taxa.
