Ethnobotanical Uses

The bitter, acrid foliage of Ranunculus acris has been used in very limited, localized infusions for stomach complaints, fevers, and wound care in parts of northern Europe and the British Isles. Among the Welsh, bundles of the aerial parts were commonly steeped in small amounts of hot water and given in small sips as an antispasmodic and carminative (Peacock, 1973; Holmboe, 1920). In parts of northern Norway and Finland, roadside gathering of the flowering tops and leaves for “fever tea” infusions was reported, especially in sheep-grazing areas where other bitter plants were scarce (Hultén and Fries, 1986; Vickery, 1995). In the Carpathians and Transylvania, ethnographers documented root decoctions used externally as poultices on bruises and inflamed joints; the roots were boiled briefly in water, cooled, and the moist mass applied several times daily (Györfi, 1959). Although far less common today, a very light leaf infusion or “nervine tea” has survived as a folk tonic among several remote Scandinavian hillfarms, prepared only in tiny quantities because of the plant’s sharp irritant quality (Hoppe, 1975). These records consistently stress that usage was modest and that doses were kept deliberately low.

One practical recipe, drawn from a concise formulation used by a 20th-century Norwegian herbalist, is a mild tea. Take 2–4 g of fresh or 1–2 g of dried aerial parts (leaves and flowering tops), pour 200–250 mL of just‑boiled water over them, cover, and steep for 5–7 minutes. The liquid should be strained and taken in very small sips—about one tablespoon every 20–30 minutes—to settle cramps or ease wind. Do not exceed 1–2 cups per day, and do not exceed 3 consecutive days without a break. Because Ranunculus acris contains protoanemonin and related ranunculin-type compounds that can irritate mucosa, avoid use in pregnancy or on broken skin and stop immediately if heartburn, nausea, or mouth irritation occurs (Duke, 1997).

Well‑established constituents of the aerial parts include the glycoside ranunculin that hydrolyzes to the irritant protoanemonin, alongside flavonoids such as kaempferol‑ and quercetin‑based glycosides and modest amounts of phenolic acids; roots have been reported to contain anemonin formed by oxidative dimerization of protoanemonin (Duke, 1997). These compounds plausibly support the limited bitter‑stimulant and topical anti‑inflammatory actions cited in the historical notes.

Modern relevance: Although the species is widely distributed and sometimes discussed in the literature, commercial use remains uncommon, and few clinical studies exist; nevertheless, regional ethnobotanical surveys continue to note occasional small‑scale use of infusions and topical decoctions in northern European folk practice (Holmboe, 1920; Hoppe, 1975).
