General Uses Top

Common products:
- The plant is cultivated commercially as an ornamental. Seedlings, rooted cuttings and potted plants are sold for garden landscaping and greenhouse production. Cut flower stems with their tall blue‑violet spikes are harvested for the cut‑flower industry and used in floral arrangements.

Industrial and craft applications:
- The fresh flower petals contain anthocyanins (mainly delphinidin‑based glycosides) that can be extracted to give a natural blue dye. Small‑scale trials have shown the extract dye’s effectiveness on protein fibers such as wool and silk, producing a fast, though pH‑sensitive, blue shade. The dye is not yet industrialised, but it provides a botanical source for craft dyeing and research into natural colourants.

Colorants and tanning:
- Delphinium cashmerianum is used locally in parts of its native Himalayan region to dye wool and silk a deep blue. The anthocyanin pigments confer colour stability in acidic to neutral baths; however, they are less stable under alkaline conditions, limiting large‑scale use. The plant does not yield tannins suitable for leather tanning.

Scientific/model‑organism use:
- The species is employed in studies of Ranunculaceae phylogeny and in investigations of the biosynthetic pathways of diterpenoid alkaloids. Recent genomic sequencing projects have generated draft reference genomes for the genus Delphinium, providing resources applicable to D. cashmerianum for comparative genomics and the development of molecular markers for breeding ornamental lines.

Properties relevant to use:
- Flower petals contain 2–5 % dry‑weight anthocyanins, predominantly delphinidin‑3‑O‑glucoside and cyanidin‑3‑O‑glucoside, giving a vivid blue‑violet hue. The alkaloid content is 0.1–0.3 % in aerial parts and is toxic, precluding culinary use. The plant’s alkaloid profile includes lycaconitine‑type diterpenoid alkaloids, which are of interest for biosynthetic research but not for industrial extraction.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- Wild populations of D. cashmerianum occur at elevations of 3,000–4,500 m in the Western Himalayas and are locally threatened by over‑collection for ornamental trade. Current commercial supply relies on cultivated propagation in nurseries and greenhouse production, which reduces pressure on wild habitats.

Standards and regulation:
- International trade in live plants is governed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and national phytosanitary regulations. Cut‑flower exports must meet phytosanitary certification and are subject to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) if listed, though D. cashmerianum is not currently listed in CITES appendices.
