Leontice leontopetalum, also known as lion's foot, is a perennial plant found in semi-desert regions. Its name comes from the Greek word for lioness, referring to the shape of its leaves. The plant grows up to 60 cm tall and has yellow flowers that bloom between February and April. It contains saponins and has a tuberous root that resembles a potato. Leontice is mostly found in North Africa, Greece, Bulgaria, and the Near East. It is listed as a vulnerable species in Greece. The plant has been used as a natural soap and has medicinal properties. It is also believed to be the plant mentioned in ancient texts as an antidote to opium overdose. A related plant, Bongardia chrysogonum, is thought to have similar properties.
