Berberis vulgaris subsp. australis, also known as Berberis hispanica, is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Berberidaceae family and the Berberis genus. It grows up to 3 meters tall and has reddish or dark purple stems and branches covered in branched spines. The leaves are oval and thick, and the flowers are yellow and form clusters of 3 to 9. The fruits are oblong lilacs or blue berries with two seeds. This plant is native to southern Spain, Morocco, and Algeria and is found in mountainous areas up to 2000 meters in elevation. It has been used for its yellow dye, edible berries, and medicinal properties, but some parts of the plant are toxic. Due to its role in the life cycle of a fungus, it has been removed from certain areas.
