Pseudoroegneria spicata, also known as bluebunch wheatgrass, is a native perennial bunchgrass found in western North America. It can grow up to three feet tall and is easily distinguished by its bluish color and awns on its seedheads. This grass has a strong root system that helps it resist drought and compete with other plants. It is commonly found in mountainous regions and is used for forage by livestock and native wildlife. Bluebunch wheatgrass is also important for revegetation and has been designated as the state grass of Montana, Oregon, and Washington. However, it faces competition from invasive weeds such as diffuse knapweed and medusahead.
