Suggest a correction!Pseudoroegneria is a genus in the grass family Poaceae (tribe Triticeae) comprising approximately twelve species of perennial, caespitose grasses native to temperate regions of Eurasia and western North America. The group occurs in steppe, alpine meadow and semi‑arid slope habitats from roughly 500 to 3,500 m elevation, and the type species is Pseudoroegneria spicata (Pursh)Á.Löve (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
Plants are tufted perennials with linear leaves whose sheaths are open and bear a short, membranous ligule. Inflorescences are solitary spikes or lax panicles; spikelets are laterally compressed, often paired, and the glumes are shorter than the lemmas. Lemmas are awned or awnless, and the mature caryopses are oblong with a linear hilum. The base chromosome number is x = 7, and most taxa exhibit 2n = 14 or 28 (Huang et al., 2018).
Species richness is centered in Central Asia (Iran, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan) and the Himalaya, with secondary diversity in the western United States. Many taxa are strict endemics of high‑elevation grasslands, sub‑alpine scree, or dry steppe, reflecting a preference for continental and temperate climates. The distribution pattern follows the steppe‑alpine gradient, with species occupying distinct altitudinal bands (Soreng et al., 2023).
As in other Poaceae, pollination is anemophilous (Soreng et al., 2023) and seeds disperse by wind; several species possess drought‑tolerant rhizome systems that enable persistence in xeric sites. Polyploidy, particularly tetraploidy (2n = 28), is common and may confer adaptive flexibility (Liu et al., 2016). Seed banks are long‑lived, contributing to resilience after disturbance.
Modern phylogenetic analyses place Pseudoroegneria as sister to Elymus and Agropyron, confirming its monophyly (Soreng et al., 2023; Liu et al., 2016). No widely accepted subgeneric classification exists; a few informal sections have been proposed but are not reflected in current checklists (Huang et al., 2018). Historical synonymizations, such as merging P. geniculata into Elymus, are not supported by molecular evidence and remain divergent opinions (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024).
Some species are cultivated for xeriscaping and low‑maintenance ornamental grasses, and P. spicata provides valuable forage for grazing animals in North American rangelands. The genus also supplies genetic resources for wheat breeding, especially disease‑resistance traits, though it is not a major crop.
Habitat loss from overgrazing, land conversion and climate change threatens several narrow‑range taxa, and detailed population assessments are scarce. Continued monitoring and ex situ conservation are essential to preserve the genetic diversity of this Triticeae lineage.
