Suggest a correction!Common products:
Candelilla wax (derived from the surface of aerial stems) is the principal product of Vellozia squamata. The wax comprises a mixture of hydrocarbons (mainly n‑nonacosane), long‑chain esters, free fatty acids, and minor resins. It is supplied as a refined, bleached material suitable for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications.
Industrial and craft applications:
Candelilla wax is incorporated in polishes and coatings (floor, furniture, automotive) to improve gloss, hardness, and scuff resistance; it is a common component in carbon paper and ink formulations to control viscosity and ink transfer; and it is used as a mold‑release agent in precision casting and rubber processing. The wax is also valued as a processing aid in adhesives and sealants.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
The refined wax is used as a glazing and polishing agent and as a processing aid in confectionery and bakery products. Although the plant’s stems and flowers have been historically used in infusions for flavoring or as a substitute for tea, such beverages are not treated here as non‑medicinal uses.
Colorants and tanning:
No documented dye, tannin, or colorant uses have been established for Vellozia squamata.
Wood and fiber:
No established timber or fiber uses are recorded.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
The refined wax is used in cosmetics and toiletries (e.g., lipsticks, creams, deodorants) as a structurant and film‑former. It is favored where a hard, glossy, and water‑resistant film is desired without animal‑derived waxes. Steam‑distilled essential oil from stems and leaves, when produced, is employed in perfumery and aroma blends; composition includes α‑pinene, β‑caryophyllene, and various sesquiterpenes, and is applied for fragrance effect only.
Properties relevant to use:
Candelilla wax shows a high melting point (68–72°C), low penetration (10–20 dmm at 25°C), and acid value typically
