Crinodendron hookerianum, also known as the Chilean lantern tree, is an evergreen tree native to Chile. Its scientific name is derived from the Greek words for "lily" and "tree", and it was named after English botanist William Jackson Hooker. The tree is found in humid and shady areas near streams in Chile. It has several common names in Chile, including chaquihue and polizón. The tree can grow up to 8 meters in height and has dark green leaves and pinkish-red flowers. Its fruit is a white capsule with seeds inside. The plant is toxic due to its content of cucurbitacins, but it is also used in traditional medicine as an emmenagogue and abortifacient. It was introduced to cultivation in the UK in 1848 and is highly valued for its ornamental flowers. It is best grown in fertile, moist, and well-drained soil in partial shade. It is hardy to -7°C and can be grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory. The plant is generally trouble-free and can be propagated through cuttings.
