Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Cabomba Aubl. is a small genus of aquatic herbs placed in Cabombaceae within Nymphaeales (APG, 2016). It contains about five species with pantropical and subtropical distribution from the Americas through C. caroliniana and C. furcata to C. haynesii (southeastern North America), C. aquatica (northern South America), and C. palaeformis (Mexico–Central America), with additional names resolved variably in recent treatments (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The type species is commonly treated as C. aquatica Aubl. (Graham et al., 1992; Tippery et al., 2008).
Plants are rooted in soft sediments and exhibit a distinctive heterophyllous shoot system. Submerged leaves are finely dissected in the classic fanwort form, opposite or whorled, with reduced or absent stipules; emergent leaves are simple, entire, peltate, and glabrous. Axillary inflorescences bear solitary perfect flowers with three narrow sepals, and 3–6 (often six) distinct petals; stamens are numerous (often 6–12), anthers extrorse; the ovary is superior to half-inferior, apocarpous with 1–3 carpels, each bearing one or two basal to marginal ovules (Graham et al., 1992). Fruits are small, aggregated achenes; seeds have a small aril, enabling buoyancy and short-distance dispersal (Gaertner, 2007).
Species richness and endemism are greatest in the Americas, where they occur in still to slow-moving fresh waters such as ponds, ditches, and lake margins, from sea level to mid elevations. Cabomba caroliniana has become naturalized in parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe, where it is a vigorous invader (Poovey et al., 2002).
Pollination is mixed: bee and fly pollination is documented for C. caroliniana, while floral cleistogamy or autogamy has been reported in C. aquatica (Borsch et al., 2003). Seed dispersal is primarily hydrochorous; vegetative propagation is common via fragmentation and rooted nodal segments. Base chromosome number remains uncertain in the genus; reported counts for C. caroliniana are variable, and a reliable gametic number is unresolved across the clade (Borsch et al., 2003).
The genus is monophyletic within Cabombaceae and sister to Brasenia (Borsch et al., 2003; Löhne et al., 2007). Subgeneric or sectional arrangements are not in current use; species limits for C. caroliniana, C. furcata, and C. haynesii have been treated differently, with some authors recognizing varieties or distinct species (POWO, 2024). Alternative classifications that have merged Cabombaceae into Nymphaeaceae have also been proposed but remain contentious (Haigh, 2010; WFO, 2024).
Cabomba species are widely cultivated in aquaria for their ornamental dissected submerged leaves; C. caroliniana in particular is a major aquatic weed outside its native range (Poovey et al., 2002). No medicinal claims are made here.
Conservation concerns primarily relate to hydrological alteration and water-quality degradation, which threaten populations through habitat loss. Research gaps include robust phylogenomics to clarify species boundaries, distribution modeling under climate change, and targeted management of invasive C. caroliniana.
