The plant is a deciduous shrub, growing to 2–3 m tall, with a spread of 1.5–2 m. The leaves are ovate, 4–10 cm long and 2–7 cm broad, with a serrated margin. The flowers are 2–4 cm diameter, with five white or pink petals, and a central yellow stamen. The flowers are produced in summer, and are followed by small, round, black fruits.

It is native to southern China and is known to be a good plant for chalky soils. It is a deciduous shrub, growing to 2-3 m tall with a spread of 1.5-2 m.
