General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Bigtooth aspen produces kraft pulp and paper; its light, uniform wood also yields lumber and veneer for packaging, pallets, furniture components, and interior millwork. It is used for oriented strand board (OSB) and other engineered wood products such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and fiberboard, and for paper-grade woodchips. Energy uses include fuelwood and chips for industrial energy production.
Industrial and craft applications:
Kraft pulping yields a strong, uniform sheet due to the species’ low specific gravity and moderate lignin content, suitable for packaging grades and printing papers. The wood machines well with minimal surface checking. Aspen is a standard genus for poplar breeding and genetics programs and serves as a reference for comparative studies within Populus; sequence resources and breeding lines for Populus are widely used to study Populus growth, wood formation, and gene regulation.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Not documented.
Colorants and tanning:
Not documented.
Wood and fiber:
The species’ low density (approximately 350–400 kg/m³ at 12% MC) and relatively low lignin (22–26% of dry matter) support efficient kraft pulping. Fibers are short and broad, contributing to uniform paper formation.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
Not documented.
Properties relevant to use:
Low specific gravity, short–broad fibers, and moderate lignin content facilitate kraft pulping and uniform paper formation; low moisture-related movement minimizes size change in interior wood products; neutral wood pH is typical for poplar (5.0–6.5).
Standards and regulation:
United States grading rules for hardwood lumber (NHLA); ISO 9001/14001 mill quality/environmental management; U.S. OSB standards ASTM D3163 (structural panels). Food contact or cosmetic uses not applicable.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Regenerates after disturbance and produces sprouts from stumps, aiding rapid site rehabilitation; harvested from second-growth northern hardwood forests in Canada and the northern United States under sustainable forestry practices such as those in PEFC- and FSC-certified supply chains.
