Sawn timber and veneer are produced from Drypetes gossweileri (trade name “Kaku”).
Industrial and craft applications:
Kaku timber is used in heavy construction, flooring, and general carpentry. The species also serves in furniture components, mine timbers, railway sleepers/cross-ties, and ship planking.
Wood and fiber:
The heartwood is valued for its durability and stability in structural and flooring applications; sapwood is used for general construction. The wood is suitable for cabinetry and joinery.
Properties relevant to use:
High density and good dimensional stability underpin its performance in heavy-duty flooring and structural uses. The species contains silica, which contributes to cutting-tool wear but improves resistance to abrasion.
Sustainability and sourcing:
The species occurs in Central and West African forests and is included in CITES Appendix II. Export is controlled under CITES regulations; information on volumes and trade may be available through the International Trade Centre (ITC) LEMIS database.

CITES export permits are required for timber shipments; species status is monitored by CITES (Appendix II) and national regulatory bodies.
