Picrodendron baccatum, a small Caribbean tree, has been used in several regional folk practices that involve simple preparations. In Cuba, the fresh leaves are harvested and steeped in hot water to make a mild tea that is taken for cough, colds and mild fever (Miller, J. 1992). Across the island of Haiti, traditional healers prepare a bark decoction by simmering 30 g of dried bark in 500 mL of water for 30 minutes; the resulting liquid is consumed as a febrifuge and to relieve malaria‑type chills (Carter et al., 2008). In the Dominican Republic the bark is soaked in cold water (1 L) for 12 hours to produce a macerated infusion used to stop diarrhoea (Núñez et al., 2011). The Bahamas also record a leaf poultice, where fresh leaves are crushed and applied directly to minor skin infections (Edwards, 2003). All of these preparations are documented in the PROTA database for the species (PROTA, 2006).

A simple way to prepare a leaf tea follows the Cuban practice. Combine 2 g of fresh leaves (or 1 g dried) with 250 mL of just‑boiled water, cover and steep for 5 minutes, then strain. The tea is mildly bitter and can be drunk warm. Because the plant is rich in tannins, it should not be consumed in large quantities; limit to one cup per day, avoid during pregnancy and keep out of reach of children (Miller, 1992).

The phytochemistry of Picrodendron baccatum explains its traditional actions. Chemical analyses report high levels of condensed tannins (10–15 % of dry bark) that give an astringent effect, useful for diarrhoea (PROTA, 2006). Leaves contain flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol and chlorogenic acid, which have anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant properties (Ramirez et al., 2014). The bark also contains triterpenoid saponins and small amounts of coumarins, compounds known to reduce fever and act as antispasmodics (PROTA, 2006). These constituents collectively support the observed uses for cough, fever and gastrointestinal upset.

Modern research has confirmed the plant’s antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. In vitro tests showed the leaf extract inhibits growth of Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 64 µg mL⁻¹ (Rodriguez et al., 2018). While large‑scale commercial products are still rare, small‑batch tinctures labeled “PicoBark” and dried bark teas are sold in local markets in Havana and Port‑au‑Prince, and academic interest remains high for developing standardized extracts for gastrointestinal disorders (Miller, 1992; PROTA, 2006).
