Moronobea (Aubl.) belongs to the Clusiaceae–Clusioideae and is accepted as a small tropical American genus with an uncertain modern circumscription. Moronobea coccinea Aubl. is the type species. It comprises about 9–11 species in the WFO (2024) and c. 12 species in POWO (2024) and occurs in lowland to lower montane rain forests of the Guiana Shield, Amazonian Brazil, the Venezuelan Guayana, and the northern Andes; it reaches c. 1500 m in some Andes and Amazonian sites, with many species restricted to white-sand forests and terra firme. Common characters include resinous latex, opposite or whorled leaves with translucent dots, small stipules, and axillary dichasial inflorescences; flowers are unisexual with a well-developed hypanthium, the androecium is fused into a central column in staminate flowers, and the ovary is superior with axile placentation producing fleshy berries. Geographic patterns suggest centers of diversity in the Guianas and Venezuelan Guayana, with several local endemics in the Guianan Highlands and Amazonianwhite-sand forests (Robyns, 1961). Pollination and dispersal are typical for the family but not well documented for Moronobea; no base chromosome number is securely recorded. Historically the genus has been treated as part of Tovomita or as distinct, and recent molecular work has placed Tovomita s.l. in the Symphonia clade (Stevens, 2001), where Moronobea appears as a near-Symphonia lineage in plastid and ITS trees (Kaur et al., 2012). Contemporary floristic treatments vary: Robyns (1961) recognized Moronobea in the Neotropics; Kew’s Plant List and later cataloging synonymize many names with Symphonia globulifera and related species, while WFO and POWO retain the name for the limited group noted above. The practical outcome is that Moronobea is best viewed as a small, possibly paraphyletic group embedded within a broadened Symphonia concept (Kew, 2013). In horticulture the genus is seldom cultivated; it is better known from occasional ecological references (e.g., Symphonia sensu lato) rather than as an ornamental. Conservation data are fragmented; several species are locally threatened by habitat loss from mining, logging, and agricultural expansion, yet taxonomic uncertainty hinders formal assessment (Robyns, 1961). Clarifying rank and membership via integrated phylogenomics and field-based monography remains a priority.
