Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Brewster (2005) records that leaves of Mammea americana are taken as a mild tea to calm stomach discomfort. In Puerto Rico, the National Center for Cultural Education notes that a bark decoction is used for colds and fever, and in the broader Caribbean, Brushwood (2003) mentions leaf and bark infusions for diarrhoea. A dried-sap poultice is reported for skin sores in Trinidad and Venezuela according to Miller and Morris (2004). These are explicit references to infusions (tea/infusion) and a decoction, with plant parts identified in each case.
For preparation, Kennedy (2006) describes a simple leaf infusion: steep 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 g) of dried leaves in 250 ml of boiling water for 5–8 minutes, then strain; take one cup, up to three times daily. Decoctions of the bark can be made by simmering 5–10 g of chopped bark in 500 ml of water for 20–30 minutes, cooling and straining before use. Aromatic coumarins are major constituents of M. americana leaves and seeds (Raman et al., 2021), and these coumarins plausibly account for the antispasmodic and antiseptic actions cited in traditional use. Commercial products (jams, syrups) remain common, while modern research explores coumarin‑rich extracts for antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory activity (Bekro et al., 2013).
General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products: Fresh fruit pulp, processed into jam, syrup and juice; seed oil extracted for soap and cosmetic use; bark, a source of tannins for leather tanning; wood used as timber for construction and furniture.
Industrial and craft applications: Timber, a heavy, fine‑grained hardwood used for furniture, flooring, cabinetry and tool handles; seed oil incorporated into soap formulations and as an emollient in skin‑care products; bark tannins employed in the leather industry for vegetable tanning; fruit pulp serves as a raw material for commercial jams, preserves and non‑alcoholic beverage bases.
Food and beverages (non‑medicinal): Ripe fruit eaten fresh; pulp processed into jam, marmalade, fruit syrup and concentrated juice; used as an ingredient in desserts such as ice cream and custard; juice employed as a flavoring in carbonated and still non‑alcoholic drinks.
Colorants and tanning: Bark contains high levels of condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) used in the tanning of hides and skins.
Wood and fiber: Wood density approximately 0.85 g cm⁻³; grain fine, allowing good polishability and durability.
Fragrance and cosmetics: Seed oil, rich in saturated fatty acids, functions as an emollient in creams, lotions and hair‑conditioning products; volatile aroma compounds (e.g., myrcene, linalool) isolated from the fruit are employed as natural flavorings in the food and beverage industry.
Properties relevant to use: Wood, high density and low shrinkage provide structural stability; seed oil, saponification value ≈190 mg KOH g⁻¹ and fatty‑acid profile ≈30 % palmitic, ≈20 % lauric, conferring hardness and stability in soap; bark tannins, high tannin content ≈15 % dry weight, ensuring effective leather‑tanning activity; fruit pulp, sucrose‑rich ≈15 °Brix and aromatic, supporting jam and beverage production.
Standards and regulation: Fruit pulp and juice comply with Codex Alimentarius Codex Stan 169‑1989 for fruit juices; seed oil is classified as a vegetable oil under Codex Stan 33‑1981 for edible oils; timber is graded according to national structural timber standards (e.g., EN 338 in Europe) and follows FAO guidelines for sustainable forest management.
Sustainability and sourcing: The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List; widely cultivated throughout tropical America, with fruit orchards providing a renewable source of pulp; wood is harvested from managed plantations or secondary forests, with harvesting practices guided by FAO’s Code of Conduct for Forest Harvesting to maintain long‑term availability.
