Suggest a correction!Common products:
Kayea beccariana (trade name: mersawa) is logged and marketed as a commercial hardwood. Principal products include sawn timber for structural and general-purpose applications, with limited use as veneer and for plywood face/back veneers where permitted. The species is also processed into furniture components and joinery in some markets.
Wood and fiber:
Timber: The wood is classified as heavy to very heavy with moderate dimensional stability. It is used in framing, joists, decking, sleepers, bridges, utility poles, flooring, and general interior and exterior joinery where durability permits. Kayea beccariana is also used for furniture parts and cabinetry. The wood machines satisfactorily and is suitable for turning and finishing; it readily accepts nails and screws but pre-boring is recommended. In plywood, it provides adequate face quality; in laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and glue-laminated timber (glulam), it is used where its mechanical properties and bondability meet performance criteria.
Properties relevant to use:
Kayea beccariana’s utility derives from its wood density in the 700–900 kg/m³ range (air-dry), favorable strength-to-weight characteristics, moderate durability, and dimensional stability that supports structural and joinery uses. The grain is typically interlocked, contributing to good resistance to splitting and providing attractive figure in finished products; natural resistance to decay is moderate, allowing exterior applications with appropriate treatment or detailing. Green-to-dry shrinkage is moderate, facilitating processing with standard kiln schedules. The wood holds nails and screws well after pre-boring and finishes to a smooth surface with clear coatings or opaque paints.
Standards and regulation:
Kayea beccariana timber is traded under standard hardwood classification systems and may be listed in national or regional standards for grading, grading rules, and strength values. In plywood and engineered wood products, it follows relevant product standards for adhesives, emissions, and dimensional tolerances. Where marketed for structural uses, properties are specified through material grading rules, visual grading systems, and, where applicable, machine grading or verified strength classes.
