Suggest a correction!Knema (family Myristicaceae) is a small to medium-sized tropical tree genus comprising about 95 accepted species with a centre of diversity in Borneo and further distribution through the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, the Philippines, the eastern Himalayas, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina and southern China. The species Knema glauca (Blume) Pierre has long served as the type for the genus (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The trees are dioecious, evergreen and resinous; leaves are alternate, often in two ranks, simple and entire, with an often persistent, fringed basal sheath that frequently encloses the terminal bud; the indumentum is typically a dense, often rusty tomentum on buds and young parts. Male flowers are usually clustered and often short-pedicellate with a calyx of two valvate sepals that splits to the base, a lobed or tube-like staminal column enclosing rudimentary pistillodes, and a well-developed nectar disc; female flowers are solitary or few in a fascicle, with a 2-lobed calyx and a single superior ovary with a single ovule and parietal placentation, the fruit a drupe with a fleshy outer wall, a thin woody endocarp, a large ruminate endosperm and a red, sometimes entire, sometimes lobed aril.
Knema reaches its highest species richness and local endemism in Borneo, with many taxa restricted to lowland to hill forest on well-drained substrates; several additional species are distributed along the Malesian arc from the Malay Peninsula to the Philippines and in secondary formations. Pollination in related Myristicaceae is often performed by thrips, but specific records for Knema are few; birds or small mammals are likely seed dispersers for the colourful arillate fruits, though detailed documentation remains sparse in Knema. Chromosome numbers are rarely reported for the genus; the more widely studied family base of x=12 provides context but cannot be transferred to Knema without direct counts.
Within Myristicaceae, Knema has long been accepted as a distinct genus differing from Myristica in its usually rusty-tomentose buds, the presence of a more or less persistent basal sheath and often clustered male flowers. Major sectional or subgeneric treatments historically recognized in Myristica (e.g., sect. Myristica and sect. Fatua) have been applied variably to Knema, but the most widely used recent infrageneric framework remains that established by Sinclair (1958) as implemented in Flora Malesiana; several species have been transferred between Knema and Myristica over time (Maas et al., 2007; WFO, 2024). Phylogenetic analyses have broadly confirmed the placement of Knema within Myristicaceae, but species-level resolution and a fully global taxonomic synopsis are still incomplete (de Block et al., 2015).
Knema has limited economic importance; a few species are collected locally for timber and many are occasionally cultivated as ornamental trees in tropical horticulture. Some populations in the Southeast Asian lowlands are under pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, and additional conservation assessments are needed for regional taxa, particularly in Borneo (IUCN Red List, 2024).
