Magnolia portoricensis, also known as jagüilla or Puerto Rico magnolia, is a large evergreen tree native to Puerto Rico and found in the Toro Negro State Forest. It is a rare and endangered species, only found in the central and western mountains at elevations of 500 to 925 meters. This tree thrives in cloud forests with high rainfall and volcanic soils. Its leaves are large and waxy, and it produces fragrant white flowers that are hermaphroditic. After pollination, it produces conical fruits with fleshy orange arils that aid in seed dispersal by birds. The tree is slow-growing and has a symbiotic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. It is used for furniture and lumber, and its oil is used in soap, lotions, and perfumes. However, due to deforestation, the population of Magnolia portoricensis is declining and it is currently endangered with no conservation efforts in place.
