It is propagated by seed or cuttings.
Magnolia macrophylla, also known as the bigleaf magnolia, is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States and eastern Mexico. It is known for having the largest simple leaf and single flower of any native plant in North America. This species has three subspecies, with some botanists considering them to be separate species. The bigleaf magnolia is a medium-sized tree with large leaves that can reach up to 3 feet 8 inches in length. Its flowers are typically six or nine-petaled and can have up to 580 stamens, making it the largest temperate flower in the world. The tree's fruit is cone-like and contains seeds with orange arils. However, the population of this tree is limited due to poor seed set and low seed viability, as well as threats such as collection and loss of habitat. In cultivation, the bigleaf magnolia requires specific conditions to thrive, such as rich, moist soil and protection from strong winds.
