Suggest a correction!Clinostemon (Lauraceae) is a small Atlantic Forest genus of dioecious, evergreen trees that produce globose to oblong drupes; the group has a consolidated but still narrow circumscription of two species (Kurkjy & Sampaio, 1933; Flora Neotropica, 1972), with C. harpohyllus as the type. The diagnostic morphology aligns with Lauraceae: opposite or subopposite, entire, strongly aromatic leaves that are frequently glaucous beneath and often show vein axil domatia; small, pedicellate, tri- to hexamerous yellowish-green flowers in axillary panicles; six tepals in two equal whorls; three fertile, extrorse anthers opening by apical valves; and a superior, unilocular ovary with a single ovule and a persistent style that expands into an apical stigma. The drupes are subtended by an accrescent perianth in some individuals and are dispersed by birds (Kurkjy & Sampaio, 1933; Flora Neotropica, 1972; Rohwer, 1993).
Diversity and range concentrate in eastern to southeastern Brazil, with one species (C. harpohyllus) reported from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro and the other (C. myrtiflorus) centered in Minas Gerais and adjacent Rio de Janeiro; both occur in lowland to lower montane Atlantic rainforest and restinga, commonly on sandy, nutrient-poor substrates (Kurkjy & Sampaio, 1933; Flora Neotropica, 1972). The genus exhibits high local endemism consistent with the strong phylogeographic structure documented across Lauraceae in Brazil (Chanderbali et al., 2001).
Intrinsic biology is typical of Lauraceae: pollen is released via anthers with valves (Rohwer, 1993), and fruit are ornithochorous; dioecy imposes cross-pollination constraints that can limit seed set in fragmented habitats. Chromosome counts are not yet available for Clinostemon; the family base of x=12 is well documented in other genera but remains unconfirmed for this genus (Rohwer, 1993; Chanderbali et al., 2001).
Taxonomy and phylogeny situate Clinostemon in the Perseeae/Mezileae complex within Lauraceae, where it has long been recognized as a small, morphologically distinct lineage keyed by flower and leaf architecture (Kurkjy & Sampaio, 1933; Flora Neotropica, 1972). Molecular work has reaffirmed Lauraceae relationships but has not extensively sampled Clinostemon; therefore, its precise placement among Persea-group genera remains unresolved, and the circumscription with two species is stable but phylogenetically under-sampled (Chanderbali et al., 2001; Rohwer, 1993; WFO, 2024). C. myrtiflorus has been variably treated as a synonym of C. harpohyllus in some treatments; this remains a point of taxonomic uncertainty requiring modern revision (POWO, 2024).
Human relevance is limited: Clinostemon appears infrequently in horticulture or silviculture and is not noted as invasive (Flora Neotropica, 1972; GBIF, 2024).
Conservation and outlook are constrained by habitat loss in the Atlantic Forest; both species are data-deficient in global assessments and require targeted field and genetic surveys to determine red-list status and guide ex situ conservation (POWO, 2024; GBIF, 2024).
