Halleria lucida, also known as tree fuchsia, umBinza or notsung, is a small evergreen tree native to Southern Africa. It is popularly grown as an ornamental tree in African gardens due to its attractive appearance, with lush green foliage and drooping branches. The tree is unique in that it produces flowers and fruit from its trunk, a characteristic known as cauliflory. Its natural range extends throughout South Africa and East Africa, and it can thrive in various habitats, including forests, mountain slopes, and river banks. Halleria lucida is easy to grow and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade, making it suitable for mildly arid areas. It is also a fast-growing tree and is known for attracting birds with its bright flowers and edible fruits. In addition to its ornamental value, the leaves and fruits of this tree are used in traditional African medicine, and it holds significance in Zulu religion.
