Buddleja crispa is a deciduous shrub native to parts of Asia, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and China. It grows in dry river beds, slopes with boulders, cliffs, and thickets at elevations of 1400-4300 meters. This species was named by Bentham in 1835 and was introduced to cultivation in 1850. It is considered one of the more attractive species within the genus and has received awards and recognition for its beauty. However, it is not entirely cold-hardy, which limits its popularity. In 1979, the Dutch botanist Toon Leeuwenberg revised the taxonomy of this species and merged five Chinese species into B. crispa. These former species are still recognized in horticulture. B. crispa is a slow-growing shrub with ovate-lanceolate leaves and fragrant lilac flowers that bloom from February to August. It is best grown in well-drained soil and full sun, and is hardy in USDA zones 8-9. Notable specimens of this species can be found in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England. There is also a cultivar called 'Huimoon' or Moon Dance
