Castilleja occidentalis is a species of paintbrush found in the Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas. It is a hemi-parasite, meaning it relies on other plants for nutrients. It is found in dry places, such as rocky soils and talus slopes, and is often associated with tufted hairgrass, golden avens, and Bellard kobresia in the subalpine zone. Its bracts are usually pale yellow to nearly white, but can vary to red and purple. It is vulnerable to trampling in fragile wet meadows.
