Syringa oblata subsp. dilatata, also known as Korean early lilac, is a subspecies of the Syringa oblata species in the Oleaceae family. It is a shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 1-3m or 5m and has ovate to ovate-orbicular leaves that turn from bronze to glossy mid-green to purple in autumn. Its fragrant flowers, which bloom in mid-spring, can range in color from lilac to red-lilac or violet-lilac. This subspecies is native to China and Korea and can be found in gravelly mountains at altitudes of 100-700m. It is widely cultivated and has notable cultivars such as 'Birchwood', 'Cheyenne', 'Donaldii', 'Nakai', and 'Wild Fire'. The name Syringa comes from the Greek word for 'pipe' or 'tube', referencing the use of its hollow stems to make flutes. The subspecies name, dilatata, means 'widened' or 'spread out', while the species name, oblata, means 'somewhat flattened at the ends, oval, oblate'.
