Industrial and craft applications: The wood is employed in high‑quality furniture, cabinetry, interior paneling and flooring; as veneer for premium furniture; for tool handles and sports equipment (baseball bats, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks); in woodturning and craft carving; and as feedstock for charcoal production; it is also used for high‑end interior doors, custom millwork, and specialty flooring.
Wood and fiber: Timber serves as construction material and veneer; wood chips are processed into kraft pulp yielding roughly 50 % of dry weight, producing paper with good brightness, tear strength and fold endurance; the resulting fibers are used in a range of paper grades; the pulp is suitable for both writing and printing papers, offering high brightness and good tear resistance.
Properties relevant to use: Air‑dry density 0.55–0.70 g cm⁻³; Janka hardness 5–6 kN; tensile strength 90–120 MPa; cellulose 48–52 % of dry mass; lignin 22–26 %; extractives ≤5 %; low shrinkage, good dimensional stability, moderate natural durability and resistance to insect attack; the wood also shows good glueability, facilitating the assembly of furniture and cabinetry.
Standards and regulation: Wood is classified under Mexican national hardwood standards (NMX‑200 series); export to the EU must comply with the EU Timber Regulation/EU Deforestation Regulation; pulp and paper operations are commonly certified under ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 9001 (quality management); forest management plans must comply with Mexico’s General Sustainable Forest Development Law; domestic harvesting is regulated by Mexican forestry law; Fraxinus uhdei is not listed in CITES.
Sustainability and sourcing: It is a fast‑growing hardwood with a 20–25 year rotation and an average annual increment of 1.2–1.5 m³ ha⁻¹; cultivated in plantations in Mexico, Central America and Brazil; harvested under sustainable forestry practices; certification is available through FSC or PEFC; regeneration occurs by natural seed fall or assisted planting, supporting carbon sequestration and local employment; its rapid growth permits short‑rotation coppice, supporting both timber and bioenergy production.
