Salvia pachyphylla, also known as Blue sage or Mountain desert sage, is a perennial shrub found in California, Nevada, and Arizona. It grows at high elevations on dry rocky slopes and blooms from July to September. This plant reaches a height of 1 to 2 feet and has blue-violet flowers, with some rare instances of rose-colored flowers. A recent study by Ivan C. Guerrero and colleagues focused on the chemical composition of Salvia pachyphylla and Salvia clevelandii, both used in traditional Latin American medicine. The researchers isolated and tested the secondary metabolites from these plants and found that eight of them had cytotoxic effects on five different types of human cancer cells. These compounds include carnosol, rosmanol, carnosic acid, and pachyphyllone.
