Salvia clevelandii, also known as fragrant sage, blue sage, Jim sage, and Cleveland sage, is a perennial plant native to Southern California and northern Baja California. It grows in coastal sage and chaparral habitats below 900 meters in elevation. The plant was named in 1874 by Asa Gray in honor of plant collector Daniel Cleveland. It is an evergreen shrub with fragrant, ashy green leaves and amethyst flowers that bloom in June and July. The plant's foliage contains camphor and 1,8-cineole, giving it a rose potpourri scent. It can also hybridize with other Salvia species in the wild. Salvia clevelandii is commonly cultivated in the Southwest USA and prefers dry summers and full sun. It has a relatively short lifespan of 5-10 years. Popular cultivars and hybrids include 'Winnifred Gilman', 'Betsy Clebsch', and 'Celestial Blue'.
