Salvia bowleyana, also known as nan dan shen in Chinese, is a perennial plant found in China, specifically in the southern region of the Yangtze River. It can be found in various habitats such as hillsides, streams, forests, and valleys at elevations ranging from 30 to 9,600 metres. This plant is used for medicinal purposes in China, similar to its close relative Salvia miltiorrhiza, and is often mistaken for it. While Salvia miltiorrhiza is commonly known as "dan shen", Salvia bowleyana is referred to as "nan dan shen", meaning "southern dan shen". It can reach up to 1 metre in height and produces purple to purple-blue flowers.
