Across the American Southeast, Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl (American beautyberry) has been recorded as a plant used in simple liquid preparations. Among Cherokee communities of the upland Southeast, fresh leaf infusions were taken to relieve fevers, while leaves steeped and strained were used as a wash for cuts and bruises (Bennett et al., 2021). In the southern Piedmont, Catawba informants described drinking leaf decoctions for cough, and applying warm compresses of the same preparation to sore muscles (Moerman, 1998). Seminole records note leaf infusions used as a fever reducer and soothing throat rinse (Swenson, 1994; Harlan, 1985). In the last case, the infusion was typically taken in modest doses and the plant was avoided in pregnancy, though such cautions are now precautionary given modern safety norms.
One practical preparation is a mild leaf infusion tea. Gather 10–15 fresh leaves (about 8–12 g), rinse briefly, and steep them in 500 ml of near-boiling water, covered, for 10–15 minutes. Strain and drink 150–250 ml, 2–3 times daily as needed, for a few days. A second, related preparation is a compress: steep the same leaf amount in 300 ml of hot water for 10 minutes, cool to warm, then soak a cloth and apply to the affected skin or muscles for 10–15 minutes, repeating 2–3 times daily. As a guideline, stop if stomach upset, rash, or increased headache occurs; avoid use in pregnancy and lactation, and keep preparations out of children’s reach. Many people use it to make a shelf-stable tincture, commonly prepared at a 1:5 ratio of dried leaves to 45% ethanol and macerated 2–4 weeks; dose around 20–40 drops 2–3 times daily.
The species contains flavonoids and anthocyanins that give the berries their deep color, as well as tannins, terpenoids, and phenolic acids—compounds broadly associated with astringency and antioxidant activity. These constituents plausibly support the recorded uses as a febrifuge and skin wash by contributing mild astringency and mild anti-inflammatory action. Clinical strength for any of these actions has not been established, and the preparation should be understood as a traditional household remedy rather than a medication.
Modern relevance remains steady but modest. Commercial extracts of American beautyberry appear occasionally in supplement catalogs, and there is ongoing interest in its constituents for laboratory study, but the plant persists primarily as a roadside ornamental and as a simple, well‑remembered home remedy in local communities (Bennett et al., 2021).
