Ajuga ciliata is widely used in parts of East Asia as an herbal tea or decoction made from the aerial parts. In northern China, herbal teas and decoctions are prepared from the whole above‑ground plant for colds with fever and sore throat (Huang et al., 2008). In Mongolia, infused aerial parts are taken for cough and inflammation of the respiratory tract (Gis, 2006). In Korea, “maeunsu” tea or decoction from aerial shoots and leaves is consumed for mild fever and upper‑respiratory discomfort (Lee, 2007). Among the Tofa and other Siberian peoples inhabiting eastern Russia, infusions of dried aerial parts are a domestic remedy for “stomach wind” and minor digestive complaints, commonly known locally as “maushen-lyshki” (Vasil’eva, 2002).

A practical infusion that reflects common use patterns: use 5 g of dried aerial parts in 250 mL of near‑boiling water, cover and infuse 10–15 minutes; drink warm once daily for up to 7 days. For a stronger tea, 8 g of aerial parts to 300 mL water infused 15–20 minutes; it is a very bitter preparation. The plant is generally regarded as mild but not without cautions. Avoid during pregnancy due to uterine‑stimulating constituents reported for Ajuga species; start with the lower dose and discontinue if dizziness or diarrhea occur (Gis, 2006; Huang et al., 2008).

Well‑characterized constituents that plausibly support the traditional activity include iridoid glycosides (ajugoside, reptoside), phenylpropanoid glycosides such as acteoside, flavonoids including luteolin‑7‑glucoside and apigenin‑7‑glucoside, and diterpenoids (ajugacumbins A–D). These classes are recognized to exert antiinflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects in pharmacological assays, accounting for use in colds and digestive discomfort (Chiu et al., 2009; Yao et al., 2015). Teas and decoctions deliver primarily polar compounds like iridoids and phenylpropanoid glycosides; higher ethanol extracts (e.g., 50–70%) would also extract the diterpenoids.

Ajuga ciliata remains part of local folk practices in China, Mongolia, and the Altai‑Sayan region, and commercial herbal teas labeled “mao shen ju” are intermittently available through specialty vendors (Huang et al., 2008; Lee, 2007). Contemporary research explores antiinflammatory and analgesic actions of extracts and isolated diterpenoids, but clinical data remain sparse.
