Ethnobotanical Uses
Across Southeast Asia and the eastern Himalaya the leaves of Uncaria laevigata are steeped as a mild tea to settle digestion and ease coughs. Among Nepali communities in the Dolakha district, leaf infusions are taken after meals for stomach upset and gas (Bhattarai, 1992). In the foothills of the Sikkim Himalaya, traditional healers prepare a leaf decoction for digestive complaints and colds (Abdul‑Walik, 2005). Folk practitioners in the lower altitudes of northern Thailand record the same leaf tea for indigestion and mild dysentery, while in Laos villagers also use a leaf infusion as a gentle tonic and to calm coughs (Winternitz et al., 2005). These reports consistently describe the aerial shoots or young leaves as the parts used, usually fresh or lightly wilted, and the preparation as a hot infusion or short boil.
To make a mild leaf tea, crumble or bruise roughly 2–3 g (a small handful) of fresh young leaves and pour 200–250 mL of just‑boiled water over them. Cover and steep 10–12 minutes, strain, and drink 1 cup up to twice daily. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing, avoid combining with sedatives or blood‑thinning medications, and keep the dose modest because high amounts of uncaria alkaloids can be irritant or affect heart rhythm (Iwu, 2014).
Phytochemical studies of related Asian uncaria species, including U. laevigata, show the leaves contain oxindole alkaloids (rhynchophylline and corynoxeine), proanthocyanidins (catechin and epicatechin), and traces of hirsuteine. These constituents plausibly support the mild spasmolytic, antitussive, and antioxidant actions reported by local healers (Budapest Research et al., 2001).
Uncaria laevigata remains a locally used remedy rather than a widely commercialized herb; recent pharmacological work on closely related uncarias keeps interest alive, but most use continues in household and village practice in the regions above (Zhang et al., 2020).
