Gentiana kurroo, also known as Indian gentian or Himalayan gentian, is a perennial herb named after the Illyrian monarch Gentius. Its scientific name, Gentiana kurroo, is derived from the native term "karu", meaning "bitter". This plant has been used for its medicinal properties since ancient times and is currently critically endangered.
