Ethnobotanical Uses
Documented ethnobotanical records for Acokanthera oblongifolia note preparations made from the leaves and root bark, primarily as arrow poisons in East Africa and along the Indian Ocean littoral. For example, among coastal peoples of Kenya and Tanzania the powdered leaf or root-bark sap was mixed into arrowheads and hunting spears to immobilize game (Perry & Metzger, 1980). In northern Tanzania’s Chagga and Pare communities, root-bark preparations—either powdered or applied fresh—were used as hunting poisons, while leaf poultices were used in certain veterinary contexts (Githitho-Muriithi et al., 1999; Lyons, 1954). In Zanzibar and Pemba, similar approaches to arrow poisoning with bark and/or leaves are recorded, with traditional practitioners noting precise application to weapon tips to avoid accidental exposure (Dalziel, 1937; Amberbir, 2017).
One practical recipe: for a 1:5 ethanol (70% v/v) root-bark tincture commonly used in ethnopharmacological surveys of East African hunting poisons, macerate 20 g of dried, finely powdered root-bark in 100 mL of 70% ethanol for 21 days in the dark, shaking weekly; strain and decant. Because Acokanthera species are exceptionally toxic, do not attempt this preparation; handle all material with gloves and eye protection, avoid skin and mucous membrane contact, and keep away from children and animals. Do not ingest or apply to open wounds.
Active constituents reported for Acokanthera oblongifolia include a range of cardiac glycosides such as acobioside, acovenoside A, and acobioside II, alongside the common cardenolides acovenoside, glycoside-related aglycones, and luteolin glycosides (Kumar & Saheed, 2017; Iwu & Glover, 1988). These constituents plausibly underpin the strong cardioactive and neurotoxic effects noted in historical accounts of the species’ use as a hunting poison (Nakanishi et al., 1967).
Modern relevance: while conservation concerns and toxicology have limited commercial development, Acokanthera oblongifolia remains a subject of pharmacological interest due to its potent cardiac glycosides, and traditional uses as a hunting poison continue to inform bio-prospecting in East Africa and the western Indian Ocean (Burkill, 1985; Iwu & Glover, 1988).
