Strophanthus hispidus, also known as the hispid strophanthus, is a liana or shrub native to West Tropical Africa, East to Tanzania, and South to Angola. It can grow up to 5 metres (16 ft) tall and has yellow corolla and yellow corona lobes spotted with red, purple, or brown. The seeds of this plant contain potent cardiac glycosides, which are absorbable through wounds, making it useful in African arrow poisons and modern medicine as a digitalis-like heart stimulant. It was first observed in Senegambia by monsieur Houdelot, then in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Gabon, and West Tropical Africa by various other explorers.
