Rauvolfia verticillata, also known as the common devil pepper, is a plant in the Apocynaceae family. Its name comes from the whorled arrangement of its leaves. This shrub can grow up to 5 meters tall and has yellowish black or brown bark. Its inflorescences can hold up to 35 or more flowers with a white or pinkish corolla. The fruits are whitish purple and ovoid, reaching up to 1.4 cm in length when ripe. This plant is native to China and tropical Asia, from India to the Philippines, and can be found in various habitats, from sea-level to 2,000 meters in altitude. In traditional Chinese medicine, Rauvolfia verticillata is used to treat snakebite, malaria, typhus, and hypertension.
