Common products:
Sawn timber, pulp, fuelwood, and tannin extracts are the primary commercial products derived from Nothofagus pumilio (lenga). The tree is harvested for its hard, fine‑grained wood and for its bark, which is processed for condensed tannins.

Industrial and craft applications:
The sawn timber is used in furniture making, interior joinery, flooring, paneling, veneer, and plywood. Small‑section wood is employed for musical‑instrument components and for craft items such as turned bowls. The timber’s dimensional stability and resistance to decay make it suitable for exterior cladding and fencing when appropriately treated. Additionally, the wood can be processed into fiberboard and medium‑density fiberboard (MDF) for construction panels.

Colorants and tanning:
Bark of N. pumilio is a source of condensed tannins that are extracted for the leather‑tanning industry. The tannin extracts are classified as “vegetable tannins” and are used to produce natural brown dyes for protein fibers (wool, silk). These applications are documented in leather‑technology literature and natural‑dye handbooks.

Wood and fiber:
The heartwood’s density (≈0.68 g cm⁻³) and strength support its use as structural timber for residential and light‑commercial construction. The fibers, averaging 3 mm in length, are suitable for kraft pulp production, yielding high‑strength paper grades. The wood also provides a high calorific value (≈19 MJ kg⁻¹) for fuelwood.

Properties relevant to use:
Key properties that enable the listed uses include moderate to high wood density, good tensile and bending strength, low shrinkage, high lignin content (≈28 % dry weight) facilitating kraft pulping, high tannin content in bark (≈20–25 % dry weight), and a high calorific value for firewood.

Standards and regulation:
Timber is graded according to Chilean standard NCh 1908 for structural wood. Pulp quality follows ISO 2470 (Kappa number and brightness). Tannin extracts comply with International Union of Leather Technologists (IULT) guidelines for purity. These standards ensure consistency and safety for commercial applications.

Sustainability and sourcing:
N. pumilio forests in Patagonia are managed under Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification in both Chile and Argentina. The species is listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN, and reforestation programmes aim to maintain sustainable harvest levels while contributing to carbon sequestration in temperate forests.
