Nothofagus antarctica, also known as Antarctic beech or Ñire, is a deciduous tree or shrub native to southern Chile and Argentina. It grows in the temperate rainforest and was previously thought to be the southernmost tree on Earth until N. betuloides was discovered on Hornos Island. N. antarctica can also be found on Hornos Island, but the southernmost individual is slightly further north than the southernmost N. betuloides. This tree typically grows 5-25 meters tall and has simple, alternate leaves that turn yellow to orange in the fall. Its flowers are small and yellow-green, and its fruit is a fragrant capsule containing three nuts. N. antarctica has been successfully cultivated in the United States and Great Britain, and has shown good hardiness in the Faroe Islands. It should not be confused with Lophozonia moorei, also known as "Antarctic beech," which is found in Australia.
