Quercus rugosa, also known as the netleaf oak, is a tree in the beech and oak family that is native to southern North America. It is an evergreen shrub or tree with brown, scaly bark and thick, leathery leaves that are dark green on top and covered in reddish-brown hairs on the underside. The young leaves are also hairy and can be red or yellow. Its Latin name, meaning "wrinkled oak," reflects the texture of its leaves. In Spanish, it has various common names such as "encino negro" (black oak) and "encino quiebra hacha" (axe-breaking oak). It is widespread in Mexico, Guatemala, and the southwestern United States, particularly in the temperate highlands of central Mexico. It can be found growing alongside other oaks, alders, pines, and Texas madrones. In colloquial language, it is also referred to as "chaparro," which is slang for a short person.
