Subgenus Quercus subgen. Quercus in Genus Quercus

In botanical taxonomy, a subgenus is a rank used to group closely related species within a genus. In the hierarchy, subgenus sits below genus and above section.

Subgenera bring together species that share distinctive morphological or genetic traits and are more closely related to one another than to species placed in other subgenera of the same genus. Large genera (e.g., Quercus, Rhododendron) are often divided into subgenera to reflect major evolutionary lineages.

When finer resolution is needed, subgenera may be subdivided into sections, subsections, and series, helping clarify relationships among closely allied species.
