Quercus tomentella, also known as the island oak, island live oak, or Channel Island oak, is a tree in the Protobalanus section of the Quercus genus. It is native to six islands, including five of the Channel Islands in California and Guadalupe Island in Baja California. The tree can grow up to 20 meters in height and has a grayish to reddish brown trunk with scaly bark. Its leaves are leathery and can grow up to 12 cm long. The species is a relict, once widespread in mainland California but now limited to the islands. It is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to threats from overgrazing by nonnative ungulates, particularly on Guadalupe Island. Efforts are being made to protect and restore the species through measures such as fencing off areas to prevent overgrazing.
