Subgenus Quercus subgen. Cerris in Genus Quercus

In botanical taxonomy, a subgenus is a taxonomic rank that is used to group related species within a genus. The Subgenus rank is placed below the Genus rank and above the Section rank in the hierarchy of taxonomic ranks.
Subgenera are used to group together species of plants that share certain characteristics and are more closely related to one another than to species in other subgenera within the same genus. For example, the genus Rosa includes several subgenera, including the subgenus Rosa (which includes most of the common garden roses) and the subgenus Hulthemia (which includes only one species, Hulthemia persica).
Subgenera are further divided into smaller taxonomic ranks, such as Sections and Series, based on their shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships. Botanists use these classifications to study and better understand the relationships between different groups of plants.
