It is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 4 metres (13 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in). The bark is yellowish-brown and peels off in thin sheets. The flowers are yellow-green and appear in May and June. The fruit is a small nutlet that ripens in September and October.

Betula humilis, also known as the shrubby birch, is a species of birch tree native to Europe and Asia. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 4 metres (13 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in). Its bark is yellowish-brown and peels off in thin sheets. The leaves are ovate and measure 1.2–3.5 centimetres (0.47–1.38 in) long. The flowers are yellow-green and appear in May and June, while the fruit is a small nutlet that ripens in September and October. It is related to Betula fruticosa.
