The species is used in the Highlands of Pakistan as a gentle febrifuge and expectorant: an infusion of air‑dried aerial parts is taken in small cups for colds and fevers. In the Altai and Tuva, a stronger decoction of aerial parts is employed as a sweat‑inducing tea during respiratory infections and mild dysentery, while a maceration in cold water of the above‑ground plant is used to soothe gastric irritation after heavy meals. Among the Buryat, an infusion of leaves is given to children as a febrifuge and to relieve colic. A practical recipe for the aerial‑part infusion used in the Altai requires 1–2 g of finely chopped, air‑dried herb in 200 ml of near‑boiling water, steep 10–15 minutes, then take 100–150 ml up to three times daily for mild fevers or coughs; avoid during pregnancy and do not use large quantities in children, as toxicaponins in the genus demand caution. The plant contains swainsonine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid, together with quinolizidine alkaloids of the cytisine type, and flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, constituents that plausibly explain its central stimulant, expectorant and gastrointestinal actions. Modern relevance: the species remains a regional remedy in high‑altitude herb markets, and recent phytochemical surveys from the Altai confirm the presence of quinolizidine alkaloids that warrant further pharmacological study.
