Medicago lupulina, known as black medick, has been recorded in European folk medicine as a plant whose aerial parts are used for infusions and decoctions that support the urinary system. In 17th‑century England Nicholas Culpeper (1653) described a decoction of the fresh leaves taken as a diuretic and as a wash for sore eyes. A century later, Grieve’s herbal compendium (1931) listed an infusion of the dried leaves for “kidney stones” and recommended a poultice of crushed leaves applied to wounds. More recent field work shows the same practice among Alpine farmers of northern Italy, where a leaf tea is brewed daily to promote urine flow (Bianchi et al., 2015). In the Basque Country of Spain, Varas and colleagues (2020) reported a decoction of the entire aerial portion used to treat bladder complaints, while Nowak and Stępniak (2018) documented a similar leaf infusion among Carpathian Poles. Together, these sources confirm that the leaves (and occasionally the whole aerial parts) are the plant parts most commonly taken as tea, decoction, or poultice for urinary and skin‑related ailments across England, the Alps, the Basque lands, and the Polish Carpathians.

A simple, safe preparation mirrors the historic practices. For a mild urinary‑support tea, combine one loosely‑packed tablespoon (≈3 g) of dried black‑medick leaves with 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain. The resulting infusion is usually taken in doses of 1–2 cups per day. For a 1 : 5 (weight : volume) tincture, place 50 g of dried aerial material in a glass jar and cover with 250 ml of 45 % ethanol. Macerate in a dark place for 14 days, shaking daily, then press and filter. The tincture can be taken in doses of 10–20 drops, three times daily, but it should not be used by pregnant women or by persons on potent diuretic medications without professional guidance.

Phytochemical analyses of Medicago lupulina have consistently identified flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, luteolin, and the isoflavones genistein and daidzein, along with coumarins, phenolic acids, and saponins. These constituents are well‑documented for the species and provide a plausible biochemical basis for the observed diuretic and mild anti‑inflammatory effects, especially given the proven activities of flavonoids and coumarins in promoting renal blood flow and increasing urine output.

While the plant remains a minor ingredient in a handful of European herbal blends and specialty tinctures, modern research continues to explore its diuretic potential in controlled animal studies, and a small number of commercial preparations are marketed for urinary‑tract support. The ongoing use of black‑medick infusions among rural communities underscores its lasting relevance, even as scientific scrutiny of its compounds expands.

Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Pulpy Coat Inhibits Germination: Seeds with a pulpy or fleshy outer coat need to have this material removed by soaking and rinsing in clean water daily for about a week. The inhibitory substances in the pulp are thus washed away, and germination rates improve.
