General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
- High-value heartwood used for fine furniture, cabinetwork, and decorative veneer.
- Tonewood for musical-instrument components (soundboards, backs, and sides in guitars and other stringed instruments).
- Turnery, joinery, inlays, and specialty carving.
Industrial and craft applications:
- Exterior joinery (limited by dimensional movement), turned objects, and ornamental carving.
- Wood-based products include engineered flooring and specialty paneling where stability and grain figure are prized.
Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- None documented.
Colorants and tanning:
- The heartwood contains quinonoid compounds typical of Dalbergia species and produces warm brown to reddish-brown tones; used historically as a natural dye for protein fibers (wool, silk) when available in commerce. No current major industrial dye use.
Wood and fiber:
- Material class: dense, oily hardwood. Stable moisture behavior when properly dried and processed; finishes to a high luster; naturally durable against insect/fungal attack due to extractives.
- Acoustic properties: favorable for resonance and projection in musical-instrument backs and soundboards; commonly selected for guitar backs/sides.
Fragrance and cosmetics:
- Heartwood essential oil contains sesquiterpenes; used in perfumery as a minor note. Wax/resin-like extractives may be components in furniture polishes. Not a major commodity in cosmetics.
Properties relevant to use:
- High specific gravity and surface hardness; excellent turning and carving properties.
- Natural quinonoid extractives confer insect/fungal resistance, natural brown coloration, and contribute to a warm scent.
Sustainability and sourcing:
- Listed in CITES Appendix II and controlled under EU and U.S. regulations for Dalbergia spp. Trade is regulated and subject to permits/clearances; long rotation times and habitat loss present supply constraints.
Standards and regulation:
- Subject to CITES Appendix II and relevant national timber-control frameworks (e.g., EU Timber Regulation) in importing countries. Illicit trade is subject to seizure and legal penalties.
