Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, Bennett et al., 2021 reported that aerial parts are infused as a mild tea to promote diuresis, and the same material is steeped as a compress to relieve joint pain. In the Philippines, a 1:5 ethanol tincture made from leaves is applied as a liniment for bruises and rheumatism (Padilla and Cruz, 2018), while in parts of northern Thailand leaf infusions are taken in modest quantities for fever and as a gentle diuretic, and poultices of bruised leaves are applied to sprains (Somboon et al., 2016). Across India, ayurvedic practitioners prepared 1:2 leaf–water macerates as topical agents for bites, rashes, and swellings (Sen et al., 2019).
For a quick 1:5 ethanol liniment, combine 20 g of fresh leaves with 100 mL of 40–50% ethanol, shake daily for seven to ten days, then strain and dab onto clean skin up to twice daily. For a compress, simmer 30 g of leaves in 500 mL of water for 20 minutes, cool, and soak a cloth to apply for 10–15 minutes as needed. Internally, do not ingest; the species contains monocrotaline and related pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause liver and lung toxicity with repeated exposure, and preparations are not recommended in pregnancy, by nursing mothers, or in children.
Active constituents that plausibly account for the observed effects include the pyrrolizidine alkaloid monocrotaline, the quinolizidine alkaloid anagyrine, and flavonoids such as genistein and apigenin, with antimicrobial flavonoids likely contributing to topical applications (Jain, 2016; Nakanishi et al., 2001).
Today, small-scale ethnobotanical research and field surveys note local continuation of these preparations in Thailand, India, and the Philippines, and monocrotaline remains a focus of drug‑discovery chemistry, while products containing the plant are generally unavailable commercially and are not promoted for internal use (Padilla and Cruz, 2018; Sen et al., 2019; Bennett et al., 2021).
