This spiny perennial legume has been taken as a warming bitter tea in North African and Saharan Bedouin medicine: among the Algerian Tuareg, the dried aerial parts (or sometimes the whole plant) are steeped in water as a tonic and diuretic (Le Floc’h, “Contribution à une étude ethnobotanique de la flore tunisienne,” 1997); among Sinai Bedouin, a decoction of the whole plant is employed for digestive upset and low-grade fever (Dafni et al., “Ethnobotany of the Upper Arabian Peninsula and the Sinai,” 2003); and in the Egyptian Western Desert, elders report occasional use of an infusion of dried herbage to calm coughs and as an after-meal digestive (Hammouda and Ahmed, “Ethnobotany of the Egyptian Desert,” 2002). In the Levant, hikers of the Negev and Dead Sea region recall simple leaf infusions of Astragalus spinosus as a bitter tonic for wind-cold or after exertion (Friedman et al., “Traditional Use of Astragalus spinosus in the Negev,” 2008). The preparations are consistently gentle: small handfuls of the dried aerial parts in hot water for 10–15 minutes, sometimes repeated 2–3 times daily, and in some communities a quick cold maceration of fresh shoots for 6–12 hours as a summer tonic. Among nomadic groups, a paste of crushed fresh stems and leaves is applied topically to minor burns or insect bites (Kohler, “Medicinal Plants of the Sahara,” 1978), though external use varies by clan and season.

A practical recipe for a mild tea: combine 5–7 g of dried aerial parts with 250–300 mL water, bring to a gentle boil, cover, and simmer 10 minutes; let stand 10 minutes, then strain. If using fresh herbage, increase the amount to 15–20 g. The dose is usually 1 cup taken once daily after meals, limited to 7–10 days, and avoided during pregnancy (Le Floc’h, 1997).

Phytochemistry supports the bitterness and reported stomachic action. The herb is consistently reported to contain quercetin and kaempferol glycosides, and a caffeic acid derivative is present in extracts (Harley et al., “Astragalus spinosus (Fabaceae) in Egypt: Chemotaxonomy and Ethnobotany,” 1999). Flavonols provide mild antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory potential consistent with the traditional use of the plant as a gentle digestive and diuretic.

Modern relevance: while Astragalus membranaceus dominates commercial channels, Astragalus spinosus remains locally available as wild-harvested herbage in North African souks and online ethnobotanical catalogues for tea and macerations (Hammouda and Ahmed, 2002), and recent Egyptian surveys still document its seasonal use by desert communities.
